Syracuse football recruiting: 2016 athlete Devin Butler becomes 7th player to choose SU in past 24 hours

Class of 2016 athlete Devin Butler verbally committed to Syracuse, he announced in a tweet Sunday morning. He is the 21st member of the Orange’s 2016 recruiting class with a week and a half until National Signing Day on Feb. 3. In the past 24 hours, the Orange has picked up seven verbal commitments.

Butler is being recruited as a wide receiver and also wants to run track at SU, according to Stephen Bailey of Syracuse.com. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Frederick Douglass (Maryland) High School product is ranked with three stars, per Scout.com. He’s also ranked as the 99th best athlete in the 2016 class, per 247Sports.com’s composite rankings.

Syracuse’s 2016 class includes athletes Moe Neal and Sean Riley, both of whom could play wide receiver or running back. Wide receiver Sadiq Palmer’s offer was pulled by the new coaching staff.

Butler was previously committed to Maryland, but decommitted following the Terrapins’ coaching change. UMD recruited him as a defensive back. Butler also had an offer from Temple.

Offensive tackle Michael Clark, who pledged to Syracuse on Saturday, was also previously committed to Maryland.
