Syracuse drops out of 1st place with 3-1 loss to Mercyhurst

Syracuse fell out of first place with a loss to Mercyhurst on Saturday. Goalie Jenn Gilligan recorded 11 saves.

Syracuse (10-11-3, 6-2-2 College Hockey America) lost to Mercyhurst (10-8-4, 7-1-2), 3-1, on Saturday at War Memorial Arena. The Orange tied the Lakers for first place in the CHA with a 2-0 win on Friday, but Mercyhurst regained the conference’s top spot on Saturday.

The Lakers led off with two power-play goals in the first period. Mercyhurst’s Paige Horton scored just five minutes into the game while Jenna Dingeldein earned her seventh goal of the season with six minutes left in the first period.

Nothing changed in the second period as the Lakers continued to build a dominating lead. Rachael Smith scored on a breakaway goal with 11 minutes left in the second period, earning her 18th point of the season.

Nicole Ferrara scored Syracuse’s only goal of the contest with eight minutes remaining in the third period. Ferrara leads SU with 11 goals on the season.

While Mercyhurst scored three goals on 14 shots, Syracuse was only able to score once on 40 shots. Orange goalie Jenn Gilligan had 11 saves in the team’s second conference loss.



SU returns to the ice on Friday, when the Orange travels to Rochester to face RIT at 7 p.m. Syracuse has outscored RIT by a total of 12-2 in two games this season, both SU victories.
