No. 4 Clarkson eases to 5-1 win over Syracuse

No. 4 Clarkson (11-1-2, 1-1-2 ECAC) pulled out a 5-1 victory over Syracuse (5-6-1, 3-1-1 College Hockey America) in the second meeting between the two teams this season.

Melissa Piacentini became the all-time points leader for SU in the win.

Clarkson’s Genevieve Bannon started the scoring for the Golden Knights with her third goal of the season, coming just under three minutes into the first period. Shannon MacAulay’s power-play goal with two minutes remaining in the opening period gave Clarkson a 2-0 lead.

The Golden Knights scored twice again in the second period. Olivia Howe’s fifth goal of the season came with nine minutes remaining in the second period, while Clarkson’s Loren Gabel would score 90 seconds later.

Clarkson’s Erin Ambrose scored her first goal of the season with 12:39 left in the third period. Cayley Mercer led all players with three points, all on assists.

Clarkson would’ve handed Syracuse its second shutout of the season, if not for Megan Quinn. The sophomore defender scored on the power play with just 31 seconds left in regulation.

The Orange returns to Syracuse for its first home game in four weeks. SU will host Cornell on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the first of six homes games to be played at the Oncenter War Memorial Arena.
