No. 1 Syracuse stays undefeated with 3-1 win over Indiana

No. 1 Syracuse (13-0, 4-0 Atlantic Coast) defeated Indiana (6-7), 3-1, Sunday afternoon to remain undefeated. Liz Sack, Alma Fenne and Erin Gillingham all scored a goal in the win.

SU outshot the Hoosiers 24-6 – 14 of which were on goal – and earned five penalty corners to Indiana’s three.

Sack scored the game’s first goal a little over four minutes into the game with a shot that found the back-right corner of the net. The goal brought her total to three on the season and Sunday marked her first start of the season.

Fenne scored in her fourth straight game for SU with 2:18 remaining until halftime. The goal came on a hard shot right in front of the Indiana net and gave SU a 2-0 cushion entering the second half.

Ten minutes into the second half, Indiana answered with its only goal of the game when Maddie Latino scored following a penalty corner. Kate Barber registered a shot on goal and Latino managed to get a stick on the ball and deflect it into the back of the net.

Gillingham brought Syracuse’s lead back to two with 12 minutes to play when she buried a rebound for the game’s final score.

The defense continued to apply relentless pressure and Indiana couldn’t break the back line. With possession held mostly in the offensive zone and midfield, goalie Jess Jecko was only required to make a pair of saves for the Orange and only faced three shots on goal all game long.

Syracuse has a pair of home games next on its slate with a game against No. 7 Wake Forest on Saturday at 1 p.m. followed by a date with No. 19 Princeton for Senior Day on Oct. 18 at 3 p.m.
