The Daily Orange is the student-run campus newspaper of Syracuse University. Founded in 1903, the newspaper became independent from the university in 1971- which means we do not receive any money or oversight from the university - and has remained independent since then. The D.O. prints Monday through Thursday during the entire academic year and has a staff of over 30 editors.
In order for students to get the most out of their time at the paper, and best prepare for the professional world after The Daily Orange, there are projects that would benefit from more funding. These are goals that will enhance The D.O. as a valued learning institution. Below is a list of projects that you can donate toward to expand the education of our students, and so The Daily Orange can continue to be one of the best college newspapers in the nation. We greatly appreciate any contribution that you are able to make.

Below is a wish list of projects that you can donate toward to expand the education of our students, and so The Daily Orange can continue to be one of the best college newspapers in the nation. Our Wish List includes staff salaries, the sports travel fund, two new computers, Adobe Cloud Software and a basement photo studio. We greatly appreciate any contribution that you are able to make.
D.O. staff salaries have been reduced for the time being because of our tight budget. But our staffers are working harder than ever. We are reimagining how The D.O. approaches online content with our newly-launched web staff. We have created task forces to assess alternative news media models so we can adapt as the field of journalism changes. And we are still writing, photographing and designing award-winning content. The D.O. needs to be able to pay full salaries in order to further staff development and ensure the most talented staff members are able to work regardless of their financial situation. This is a priority for The D.O., and we would appreciate any contributions. We would like to raise $10,000 for this project.Goal: $10,000
Sports Travel Fund
The ability to travel to Syracuse away games is something that has set the D.O's sports coverage apart from other publications. It's something we need to continue so our staff can keep providing in-depth, compelling coverage of teams that students and the community have repeatedly shown they are interested in reading about. To do the best work possible, D.O. sports needs to be able to continue to travel to away games. We would like to raise $5,650 for this project.Goal: $5,650
Two New Computers
Some of our current computers haven't been replaced since 2007, and are notorious for malfunctioning. They will randomly shut down or show a blank screen, and various keyboards are known to stop working. The design staff needs these computers to create the print paper. When our staff has to try and bring an outdated computer back to life they lose valuable time that should be spent editing, writing and learning. New computers would allow us to save time and work with up-to-date technology. We would like to raise $900 to buy two Microsoft computers.Goal: $900
Adobe CC InDesign, Illustrator & Photoshop
The D.O.'s outdated copies of InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop quit randomly while designers are working. This slows down production and limits the work designers can get done before deadline. Plus, The D.O. is a learning institution, and it’s important that our staff is taking away valuable skills from their work. While our outdated copies of InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop might be a lesson in patience, our designers aren't getting the chance to practice the newest softwares that populate the workplace they hope to move into. We would like to raise $2,100 for this project.Goal: $2,100
In-House Photo Studio
D.O. photographers have to book time in the Syracuse University photo studios if they need studio access. Unfortunately, the rest of the photographers at SU book the Syracuse studios as well. Basically, we have limited access, and that affects our content. Some strong art ideas have not been used simply because there was no available studio time to take the shots. A separate studio, complete with all the necessary equipment to do a shoot – built in the extra space of The D.O. basement – would eliminate that problem. It would also encourage our photo staff to get creative and work ahead to try new and interesting photo ideas. The studio would include basic backdrops and lights. We would like to raise $1,500 for this project.Goal: $1,500
