Treanor’s hat trick leads No. 1 Syracuse past Cornell for 8th straight win

The heavy snow and wind made for a miserably cold night at Schoellkopf Field, but even that didn’t slow down a red-hot Kayla Treanor.

The Syracuse sophomore scored three goals to bring her season total to 54, and the No. 1 Orange (14-1, 5-1 Atlantic Coast) fended off a furious Cornell (6-7, 3-2 Ivy League) rally for a 7-5 victory in Ithaca, N.Y., on Tuesday night.

Katie Webster added a career-high three assists to help SU defend its new perch atop the national rankings despite being held to single digits for the first time this season.

The weather conditions produced a sloppy first half, as the two squads combined for 24 turnovers. The Orange, however, managed to string together the only four goals of the period, including a pair from Treanor that sent SU into the half up 4-0.

But the early part of the second half belonged to Cornell’s Lindsay Toppe. The junior netted three unanswered goals to slash the SU lead down to one with 15:25 remaining.

Although Treanor answered only 2:05 later, the Orange was not able to pull away. Clinging to a 5-4 lead, SU head coach Gary Gait called a timeout with about nine minutes left on the clock to set up his offense.

The teams then traded goals before Katie Webster gave SU a final insurance tally with 6:03 left.

Goalkeeper Alyssa Costantino shut the door on the Big Red’s final chances, and went the distance for the first time since March 15 against Florida.

The Orange must now carry its eight-game winning streak and top ranking to No. 9 Notre Dame on Saturday for one final tune-up before the ACC tournament at 3 p.m.
